Required
  • A backyard with a small garden.
  • If there is no backyard, just go to a  public park.
  • a paper and a pen
  • A magnifying glass

How to do it

  • Go for a walk around the park.
  • Show them how many different varieties of plants are there. The different shpaes of the leaves.
  • Tell them about the small plants, shrub, climbers, tree, tendrils etc.
  • Ask them to find how many different shapes of leaves they could find out in the area. Make the write it down. If the child is big enough to draw the shape, ask them to draw different shapes of the leaves.
  • Make them observe different colours of the flowers.
  • Let them observe the insects found in the park. Small birds they could see perching in the park.
  • If there is any very small insects, let them use the magnifying glass.
  • Let them observe why some leaves are fallen on the ground.
  • make them observe the budding leaves and the old leaves. Budding flowers are really a fantastic one to see. Ask them to note down the budding flower. If you can go for a walk the next day, ask them to observe what happened to the budding flower.
  • Tell them that study about the plants in botany and study about animals is zoology.
  • Later on , make a seperate record for botany and zoology.
  • Encourage your child to share her science records with her friends and teachers.
